Noises

“Noises are often annoying, and they may have serious consequences for the human organism. Loud night noises are known to cause dangerous blood-pressure rises in sleepers. Hundreds of thousands of noise measurements have been made with soundmeters. Average conversation among three of four persons in a room registers at 65-70 decibels; piano practice, 75; a roaring lion, 95; Niagara Falls, 95; thunder, 80-100, and an airplane taking off, 115-120 decibels.

Sounds experts have also made detailed studies of familiar noises. Just what is a noise? The generally accepted definition is that it is nonmusical sound. Not all noises are displeasing or harmful.”
