Painting the fence
The sun was shining and the birds were singing and Tom was painting Aunt Polly´s fence. The work was proceeding very slowly when Ben arrived.
“Do you want to go swimming?” he asked.
Tom wanted to go swimming more than anything else in the world, but he didn´t answer. He stepped back and admired his painting.
“What a pity you have to work!” said Ben.
“Oh. Hello, Ben. I didn`t see you,” answered Tom.
“That`s hard work! Poor you!” Ben sympathized.
“Work? This is a fun! And only I can do it. Aunt Polly says so!”
Ben looked at what Tom was doing again. It looked different now, it looked interesting and desirable.
“Can I do some painting?” he asked.
“I am sorry, Ben. It`s a special work, you know. You can´t do it, only I can do it.”
“I`ll you give you my apple if you let me paint.” Ben offered.
“I don´t know. I really don´t know. Ok. But only as a special favor.”
Then, Ben started to paint the fence and Tom sat and watched him to work. He ate the apple, which tasted better than any apple in the world. Other friends arrived and from them he also collected a kite, a toy soldier, a kitten with only one eye, some oranges and other “valuable treasures”.
Tom had a wonderful day, he rested a lot, he talked a lot, he received a lot of gifts, but he didn`t paint very much; however, at the end of the afternoon, Aunt`s Polly fence looked marvelous. Tom discovered a great law about human nature that day: if you want someone to do something, you must tell them that they can`t do it.
