Why do you need a strategy?

First of all - why bother? Is it not easier to just make it up as you go along?

Well. . . I’d suggest that running a company (even a small one) is an incredibly complex thing to do. Without the development of some kind of strategy (or even just a view on the firm’s direction) then the decisions that you’ll have to make about the direction of the business will be done on the fly and without much thought. If you make these decisions up as you go along invariably it will lead to an increase in your stress levels (not good). And (more importantly) it makes it very difficult for you to convince your team that you know what you’re doing and makes it hard for them to follow you if you don’t know where you’re going.
So. . . to reduce stress levels and motivate your team a strategy is a good starting point.
